I’ve known and researched about become a helicopter pilot for the last 3 years, yet I only came across this issue about a week ago when I was told that I would not be able to join the RAF as a pilot with glasses, contacts or laser eye surgery.

Is there any way, any exception that will let me join the RAF with imperfect vision?

I am 13 now and I have had contacts for about 3 years and I hate them!! I always have to take them out at night, they dry out really easily and they sometimes irritate my eyes. I have to wear glasses then I really really hate how I look in glasses.. I am also a competitive swimmer and I swim everyday. So it’s a hassle with them with that too. I can’t see very well because I don’t wear them when I swim. So I was wondering if I should get Laser Eye Surgery. Should I?

I have a friend that got it 4 years ago when he was like 24 yrs old. He’s 28 now and he says he still sees good without glasses but his sight is not perfectly 20/20 anymore. he says it’s because of his age.
I would like to get it but I’m scared that will happen to me and my vision will get bad. I’ve been wearing the same glasses for like 3 years and I don’t think it’s been getting worse. I’m about to turn 28. Is it a good time to get it?

With the prices quite low (cost approx 2-3 years worth of glasses) – Is there any known side-effects or issues that have occurred in any case after having laser eye surgery?
        *Negative* side-effects

Has anyone ever gone blind from laser eye surgery? I am going to be 26 next week and I was going to buy some designer glasses for my birthday but I am thinking of getting laser eye surgery instead do you think it will save me money and hassles in the long run? I have been wearing glasses for 3 years and my prescription is getting worse.

My prescription is -8 for both eyes (they are actually -8 point something, but I don’t remember what exactly). I have slight astigmatism as well, but no other issues with my eyes. I’m in my early 20s, and my eyes have not stabilized yet. My prescription seems to get worse by a point or so every 2-3 years.

I’m 14, I’ve worn glasses for 3 years. I don’t mind wearing them but sometimes it kind of bothers if I see a pair of sunglasses I really like but I can’t wear them. I’ve considered getting transitions but I’m not sure. I don’t know how much they are yet. I know the cost of lasik.

Anyway, am I too young to get it? If I’m not, do you think I should?
Thanks. icon smile Am I too young to get lasik eye surgery?

I am considering getting it done because contacts and glasses can be a big pain at times.

I remember my grandpa got it YEARS ago when it just came out and it only lasted him about 3 years i think. Well i know it has gotten much better but how long does it typically last now a days?

my left eye has almost perfect vision. my right eye, however, is half blind. (my doc said that if i ever lost my left eye i’d be considered legally blind, although i’d still be able to see a little).
anyway, my right eye has a pretty bad astigmatism. my cornea is healthy and i’d only have to get one eye done.

i’d have to wait 3 years anyway, though.
but i’m not sure what the other qualifications are for lasik, so do you think i qualify?

            thanks!

I seriously want to get the surgery done, probably in about 2-3 years, when I’m around 19-20 years old, but I wanted to know when a good time to get it.

How much will it cost for one eye?

And are there any negative side-effects from LASIK surgery?

And if you have had it, how was it? Does it hurt to get it done? Can you see clear now?
